Driving a car in Kenya without a valid driver’s license is against the law. If found guilty, there could be a Ksh 1,000 fine. As a result, you should be sure to renew your driver’s license as soon as it expires.
Currently, Kenyan drivers renew their licenses online through the eCitizen platform, which serves as a one-stop shop for all government services.
How To Renew Your Driving License Online
It only takes less than five minutes to renew your driver’s license online, with five simple steps to follow.
Step 1. Log In To Your eCitizen Account
You can use this link to access the eCitizen portal: https://accounts.ecitizen.go.ke/
To log in, click the sign-in button in the upper right corner.
Your information will appear above the website after a successful log-in, so you can be certain that you have logged into your account.
Click the “Apply for a Driving License” icon after scrolling down.
After that, you will be taken to the NTSA dashboard.
You will be able to view the details and status of your driver’s license; in this example, it has expired and has to be renewed.
Click the renew button.
Step 2. Provide Driving Licence Information
Choose the type of driving license you now possess under Type of Renewal; if it is the Red Book, as in this instance, select it.
- If you’re renewing the smart driving license this option will not be available as the system already picks that you have a smart DL.
- The rest of the steps are however similar with only one extra step where you will be required to enter a collection center for your Smart DL.
If applicable, enter your birthplace and blood type now.
Enter other details by scrolling down, such as your physical address, county of residence, and country of residence.
Upload a JPG or JPEG file of your passport photo to this tab.

After attaching your photo, Red Book DL users should check the box below to ensure they have entered all necessary information and then click Renew.
Step 4. Make Payment
There are several payment options; choose the one you want, and a drop-down menu containing payment instructions will appear.
In Kenya, renewing a driver’s license for one year costs KSH650.
Click the “Complete” button after paying.
Step 5. Download The Renewed Driving License
Your driver’s license has now been renewed; to download it, click the download button in the upper right corner.
The renewed driver’s license ought to resemble the picture up above.
To show it to a traffic police officer if requested, print it and carry it in your car or store it on your phone.
How to Renew Smart Driving License
You will be taken to the payment section as indicated below after completing the general information.
There are multiple payment options; choose the one you want, and a drop-down menu containing payment instructions will appear.
The Smart driver’s license renewal is valid for three years, in contrast to the Red Book driver’s license.
The cost to renew a Smart driving license in Kenya for a period of three years is Ksh 3,050.
Click the “Complete” button after paying.
This page will be the one to which you are sent so that you may download your receipt.
Your driver’s license is now renewed, however to have your biometrics taken and your passport photo taken, you must go to a Huduma Center nearby.
- When going to the Huduma Center carry with you the payment receipt and your original ID.
- Once that’s done you’ll need to wait for 3 to 4 weeks then NTSA will communicate with you to go collect your smart driving license at the collection center that you earlier selected.
